In letters to his brother Van Gogh describes Arles as his "Japan" and decorates a frame with Japanese calligraphy. Monet builds a Japanese bridge over his water-lily pond, and Arguenteil echoes Hokusai. Both reveal a mind-set that manifests influences from the East. Monet's metaphoric landscapes suggest a Zen Buddhist sensibility, and Van Gogh's brush strokes are rooted in Asian art. These painters and those who have been influenced by Japonisme inspire me.
